What This Speed Test Measures

This tool measures your browser's connection to a public speed-test network. It estimates ping with small requests, download speed by receiving test data, and upload speed by sending temporary test data.

Results can vary between runs because Wi-Fi strength, background downloads, VPNs, mobile networks, browser throttling, and hosting location all affect the path your data takes.

Understanding Your Results

Download speed

Download speed is how quickly data reaches your device. It affects video streaming, app updates, page loading, downloads, and cloud file access.

Upload speed

Upload speed is how quickly your device can send data. It matters for video calls, sending files, live streaming, backups, and online collaboration.

Ping and latency

Ping is the delay between your browser and the testing server. Lower latency makes calls, gaming, remote desktops, and interactive apps feel more responsive.

Jitter

Jitter is variation in latency from one request to the next. A connection can have good speed but still feel unstable if jitter is high.

Why Results Differ Between Speed Tests

Speed tests depend on the server being tested. ConverterKey uses a public speed-test network, while other services may choose different nearby servers, use more parallel connections, or route through a different network provider.

Wi-Fi signal, router load, VPNs, browser extensions, background cloud backups, mobile network conditions, and server distance can all change the result. For a fair comparison, run tests from the same device, on the same network, close together in time.

How to Get a Cleaner Result

  • Pause large downloads, uploads, cloud backups, or streaming before running the test.
  • Run the test more than once and compare the middle result instead of a single spike.
  • Test near your router, then test farther away if you are troubleshooting Wi-Fi coverage.
  • Try with and without a VPN if you want to see how the VPN route affects speed.

Common Speed Ranges

SpeedTypical use
5-25 MbpsBasic browsing, email, messaging, and one lower-resolution stream.
25-100 MbpsHD streaming, everyday browsing, casual downloads, and a few connected devices.
100-500 MbpsMultiple streams, large downloads, remote work, gaming downloads, and busy households.
500+ MbpsLarge file transfers, many active devices, frequent cloud work, and high-demand home networks.
