What is a board foot?
A board foot is a lumber volume equal to a board that is 1 foot long, 1 foot wide, and 1 inch thick. It is equal to 144 cubic inches or 1/12 cubic foot.
Estimate board feet for lumber and calculate total cost from board dimensions and price per board foot.
Board feet measure lumber volume. The standard formula is:
board feet = length (ft) × width (in) × thickness (in) ÷ 12
Multiply the result by the number of boards to get total board footage. Multiply total board feet by the price per board foot to estimate the total lumber cost.
A board foot is a lumber volume equal to a board that is 1 foot long, 1 foot wide, and 1 inch thick. It is equal to 144 cubic inches or 1/12 cubic foot.
Use the formula board feet = length in feet × width in inches × thickness in inches ÷ 12. Multiply by the number of boards for the total.
Multiply total board feet by the price per board foot. If you do not need a cost estimate, leave the price as 0.
